Axial piston pumps of a closed circuit

Axial-piston hydraulic pump - one of the types of rotary-piston hydraulic machines, in which the axes of the pistons (plungers) are located parallel to each other on the side cylindrical surface or next to each other on the side surface of the cone of rotation. 

The axial-piston hydraulic pump is one of the most common types of hydraulic machines. Both pumps and hydraulic motors of this design are used. One of the advantages of axial-piston pumps is the possibility of adjusting the working volume. Changing the working volume is carried out by changing the angle of inclination of the disc or the axis of the cylinder block. 

Structurally, axial-piston hydraulic pumps can be divided into: 

• axial-piston hydraulic pumps with an inclined block
• axial-piston hydraulic pumps with an inclined disk

The maximum angle of inclination with an inclined disc is limited to 15...18°. This limitation is associated with the growth of contact loads between hydraulic machine parts. At the same time, in pumps with an inclined block, the increase in the angle of inclination is limited only by design parameters, and can reach 40° (usually up to 25°). But pumps with an inclined disk have the advantage that when they are adjusted, it is easy to reverse the supply of the working fluid.

According to the type of application in hydraulic systems, axial-piston pumps are:

• open circuit axial-piston pumps
• closed circuit axial-piston pumps

In hydraulic systems with a closed circuit, hydraulic oil circulates between the hydraulic pump and the hydraulic motor (the oil after leaving the hydraulic motor returns to the suction line of the hydraulic pump) and, unlike the system with an open circuit hydraulic pump, does not return to the tank after that.

The advantages of these systems are:

• compactness;
• less weight;
• there is no need for a large oil tank;
• greater working pressure;
• higher reaction speed (due to the absence of directional valves).

It should be added that quite often to ensure the operation of such a hydraulic system, together with axial-piston hydraulic pumps of a closed circuit, a "priming" pump is also used, which compensates for leaks of the working fluid from the closed circuit.

Closed circuit axial piston pumps are used as hydrostatic transmission components in self-propelled machines such as skid steers or bulldozers, for rotary drives of stationary and mobile equipment of all kinds.

Conventionally, they can be divided into:

• Axial-piston pumps of medium power;
• Axial-piston pumps of high power.
