Open circuit axial piston pumps
Axial-piston pump - one of the types of rotary-piston hydraulic machines, in which the axes of the pistons (plungers) are located parallel to each other on the side cylindrical surface or next to each other on the side surface of the cone of rotation.
According to the type of application in hydraulic systems, axial-piston pumps are divided into:
- open circuit axial-piston pumps
- closed circuit axial-piston pumps
In closed circuit hydraulic systems, hydraulic oil is supplied between a closed circuit axial-piston hydraulic pump and, for example, a hydraulic motor. In such systems, the oil after leaving the hydraulic motor returns to the suction line of the hydraulic pump and does not return to the tank after that.
Axial-piston hydraulic pumps with open circuit supply oil to the hydraulic system, but after working on the hydraulic motors and/or hydraulic cylinders, the oil returns to the tank and is sucked up again by the hydraulic pump.
Open- circuit axial-piston hydraulic pumps are used mostly in industrial hydraulic systems, and closed- circuit axial-piston hydraulic pumps are used in mobile hydraulics (special machinery, agricultural machinery, construction machinery, etc.), where compactness and size of hydraulic systems are important.
Axial-piston hydraulic pumps with open circuit is one of the most common types of hydraulic machines. Both pumps and hydraulic motors of this design are used. One of the advantages of axial-piston pumps is the possibility of adjusting the working volume. Changing the working volume is carried out by changing the angle of inclination of the disc or the axis of the cylinder block.
Structurally, axial-piston pumps can be divided into:
- axial-piston pumps with an inclined block
- axial-piston pumps with an inclined disk
The maximum angle of inclination with an inclined disc is limited to 15...18°. This limitation is associated with the growth of contact loads between hydraulic machine parts. At the same time, in pumps with an inclined block, the increase in the angle of inclination is limited only by design parameters, and can reach 40° (usually up to 25°). But pumps with an inclined disk have the advantage that when they are adjusted, it is easy to reverse the supply of the working fluid.
The advantages of axial-piston pumps are:
- With small sizes, they have great power;
- Have high efficiency even at high pressure values (mainly up to 320-450 bar);
- It is possible to easily adjust the working volume of the pump or change the direction of the fluid flow without changing the direction of rotation of the input shaft.
Often, additional regulators are also installed on such pumps, which allow you to immediately limit the working pressure, flow rate and even the maximum power of the pump.
This also allows it to operate both at low pressure and almost zero consumption at idle speed, which in turn improves the energy efficiency of the entire system.
Axial piston pumps are used as hydrostatic transmission components or in high pressure industrial systems when gear pumps are not sufficient.
Conventionally, they can be divided into:
- Axial piston pumps of low power;
- Axial-piston pumps of medium power;
- Axial-piston pumps of high power.
