Radial piston pumps

Radial piston pump — rotary-piston (rotor-plunger) pump, the axis of rotation of the rotor which is perpendicular to the axes of the working bodies or forms an angle with them greater than 45 °.In the rotor of the pump, which is eccentrically placed in a cylindrical holder, there are cylinders, the magnitude of the stroke of the plungers in which, and hence the performance of the pump, is determined by the magnitude of the eccentricity. 

Such pumps are used in high pressure hydraulic systems. They are most often used in installations with a pressure of up to 700 bar, but there are also units that operate at higher pressures and reach values of more than 1000 bar. Units of radial piston type are limited by frequency of rotation of a shaft to 1500 rpm. This is due to the high inertia of the rotating parts. 

Radial piston pumps are of two types: 

• with an eccentric shaft
• with an eccentric rotor

In a pump with an eccentric shaft, the pistons are located in the stator of the pump. The axis of the stator and the shaft coincide, but the shaft has a cam offset from the stator by a distance of "e". Such hydraulic installations have a valve distribution of liquid. When the working chamber is compressed, the suction valve closes and the discharge valve opens. In the case of expansion of the working chamber, the opposite situation occurs. 

In a pump with an eccentric rotor, the main part is a rotor with built-in pistons. There can be many pistons and they can be arranged in several rows. The rotor rotates in the housing (stator). The axis of the rotor is set with an offset of the center relative to the axis of the stator by the value of "e", as shown in the figure. Suction and discharge systems are located in the center and are separated from each other by a special partition. 

The advantages of radial piston pumps are: 

• such pumps can operate at very high pressures;
• have a fairly high efficiency even at high pressure values;
• high energy consumption per unit mass.

Radial-piston pumps are used in hydraulic systems of general machine-building purpose, sheet bending units, presses, machines, metallurgical and mining equipment.
